UK Top 40 Singles Chart 19th February 1984 – Talk About Pop Music



So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, forty years ago, there were five new entrys, fifteen climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Echo and The Bunnymen – “The Killing Moon”
Echo and The Bunnymen make it a sixth week with this track, as they fall fifteen places and nearly out of the top 40.

39. Marilyn – “Cry And Be Free”
Marilyn returns with the follow up to “Calling Your Name” with this week’s first of only a few new entry’s.

38. Soft Cell – “Down In The Subway”
Another new entry comes from Marc and Dave of Soft Cell which is the second track to come from “This Last Night In Sodom”.

37. Big Country – “Wonderland”
Going down sixteen places are Big Country with their latest, which achieves six weeks inside the top 40.

36. Marillion – “Punch And Judy”
Week three sees Marillion down four places with the lead single from their new album, which is out a month from now.

35. Carmel – “More, More, More”
Manchester band Carmel return to the top 40 this week with another track from their album, “The Drum Is Everything”.

34. Re-Flex – “The Politics Of Dancing”
While making their chart debut are British group Re-Flex with the debut single, which was originally released a year ago!

33. Elbow Bones and The Racketters – “A Night In New York”
Can it really be true?! Elbow Bones and The Racketters suffer a record FOURTH week as non-movers in the same spot!

32. Gloria Gaynor – “I Am What I Am”
Gloria Gaynor keeps moving about but this week she’s down nine places with her latest Disco dancefloor anthem.

31. Van Halen – “Jump”
This is where our highest new entry comes in and it’s a UK top 40 first for American band Van Halen, who released their debut single back in 1978, but at long last they’ve come this far here in the UK!

30. The Manhattan Transfer – “Spice Of Life”
Sinking eight this week are The Manhattan Transfer with their spice of life, which gave them a UK top twenty hit.

29. Eurythmics – “Here Comes The Rain Again”
More rain befalls the Eurythmics this week as they dive eleven places and out of the top twenty after five weeks there.

28. Hot Chocolate – “I Gave You My Heart”
The new single from Hot Chocolate put them back in the chart last week and seven days on they climb ten places.

27. Ultravox – “One Small Day”
Hot Chocolate take one small step this week as their latest climbs just two places in its third week on the chart.

26. Fiction Factory – “(Feels Like) Heaven”
The Fiction Factory depart the upper half of the chart with their first hit, which drops ten places and out.

25. Henry Mancini and his Orchestra – “Main Theme From The Thorn Birds”
The first of two songs from The Thorn Birds from Henry Mancini and his Orchestra was a new entry last week and goes up six places…

24. Juan Martin – “Love Theme From The Thorn Birds”
…while the love theme from crashes out of the top ten after just one week and down fourteen places for guitarist Juan Martin.

23. Swans Way – “Soul Train”
Swans Way achieved just one week, inside the top twenty with their first chart hit which falls three places.

22. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive”
While making way for some newcomers is Thomas Dolby as he too stops being hyperactive and goes down five places for a change.

21. Matt Bianco – “Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed”
It’s been a very good second week for Matt Bianco with their first top 40 charting single, which goes up fifteen places.

20. Duran Duran – “Mew Moon On Monday”
Duran Duran drop out of the top ten this week, down eleven places with the follow up to “Union Of The Snake”.

19. Slade – “Run Runaway”
Slade are back in the top twenty for the third time in three months, this time it’s not a re-issue but a new track and they are up fifteen places.

18. The Smiths – “What Difference Does It Make?”
The Smiths can ask no more as their current single peaks and falls back six places after a solid month of progress.

17. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright”
Down and out of the top ten is Joe Fagin with his theme song from Auf Wiedersehen Pet, which is ten places lower than it was.

16. Break Machine – “Street Dance”
Break Machine dance their way into the top twenty this week as they go up eleven places, which is much better than this single has done in their home country.

15. Howard Jones – “Hide And Seek”
Joining them is Howard Jones with his new entry last week, which goes up nine places to put him back in the upper half of the chart.

14. Shannon – “Let The Music Play”
The music continues to play for Shannon as does a higher chart position. She’s up five this week with her first hit.

13. Madonna – “Holiday”
Meanwhile, the holiday is over for fellow American Madonna as she drops seven places and drops out of the UK top ten.

12. Billy Joel – “An Innocent Man”
We have two joint highest climbers of sixteen places this week and one of them is Billy Joel as he heads for another big hit here.

11. Madness – “Michael Caine”
Proving they are box office dynamite are Madness with their tribute to the British actor as they climb two more places.

10. Kool and The Gang – “Joanna”
This week’s other joint highest climber of sixteen comes from Kool and The Gang and it pushes them into the top ten.

9. Nik Kershaw – “Wouldn’t It Be Good?”
Pushing his way into the top ten for the very first time is Nik Kershaw as his first chart hit goes up five places.

8. Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
Cyndi Lauper remains top ten but down four places from number four with her debut single, which is in fact a cover!

7. Rockwell – “Somebody’s Watching Me”
Rockwell hopes somebody’s watching him in the UK top ten as he moves up eight this week with his debut release.

6. Matthew Wilder – “Break My Stride”
Dropping just one place is Matthew Wilder with his first UK hit single, which is the second to come from his debut album.

5. The Style Council – “My Ever Changing Moods”
Last week’s highest new entry from The Style Council goes top five in week two with a climb of three places.

4. Queen – “Radio Ga Ga”
Dropping two is the former number two that’s been at number two for the past two weeks, and it comes from Queen!

3. The Thompson Twins – “Doctor Doctor”
The Thompson Twins are non-movers this week with the follow up to “Hold Me Now” as they stay top three but in the same spot.

2. Nena – “99 Red Balloons”
Germany’s Nena soared up the chart last week as the highest climbers and they make even more impressive moves a week on as they go up nine more.

1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax”
For a fifth week, its Frankie Goes To Hollywood at the very top with their debut single. But can someone stop them from a sixth? Will it be Nena, The Style Council who poses the greatest challenge? There’s only one way to find out…
