Spotify has announced a new AI Persona badge designed to help listeners identify artist profiles whose public identity may be AI-generated.
Starting in mid-September, Spotify will start showing the badge on certain artist profiles, including in the profile banner, About section, Search, and track rows across playlists. As part of Spotify’s larger effort to improve transparency around artist identity, AI usage, and trust on the platform, here’s everything you need to know about this update…
Spotify Announces New “AI Persona” Badge for AI-Generated Artist Identities
What Is an AI Persona?
Spotify defines an AI Persona as an artist whose public identity represents an AI-generated photorealistic human. This includes the way an artist presents themselves through their name, profile images, header images, album artwork, or other visual elements.
One important distinction to note, however, is that this badge is about the artist’s public identity, not necessarily how the music was made.
That means an artist using AI tools somewhere in the creative process is not automatically considered an AI Persona. Spotify already has separate AI Credits for artists who want to disclose how AI was used in the creation of their music.
“With AI Credits, we have seen that people are eager to take the opportunity to be transparent and share how they used AI as part of their song’s creative process. We’re hoping for a similar level of self-disclosure for AI Personas,” explains the official announcement.
The AI Persona badge is specifically meant to identify artist profiles that appear to be built around an AI-generated identity rather than a real person.
How the Badge Will Work
Artists can now self-disclose as an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists. Once the badges roll out, those profiles will show an “AI Persona” badge.
Spotify will also review artist profiles themselves. If Spotify determines that a profile appears to represent an AI-generated identity, the platform may apply a “Likely AI Persona” badge. Artists who receive a Spotify-applied badge will be notified and given the option to confirm the label or appeal the decision if they believe it was applied incorrectly.
What Does This Mean for Recommendations?
One of the biggest parts of this announcement is how AI Persona profiles will be treated in Spotify’s recommendation system…
By default, music from AI Personas will not be included in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic recommendations.
That means these tracks will not automatically appear in personalized recommendations unless a listener shows intentional engagement, like following that AI Persona artist.
For independent artists, this is especially exciting because Spotify is making a clearer distinction between authentic artist profiles and profiles built around AI-generated identities.
As AI music continues to grow across streaming platforms, artist identity is becoming a bigger part of how platforms build trust with listeners. This update helps create a little more clarity around what people are engaging with, while still giving listeners the choice to follow and support AI Persona artists if they want to.
On the other hand, it also reinforces something independent artists already know: your story, your presence, and your connection with your audience are part of the value of your music.
Looking Ahead…
Spotify has been investing more into artist trust features this year, including Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, AI Credits, and Artist Profile Protection. Together, these tools point toward a bigger shift: platforms are not only looking at the music itself, but also at who is behind it, how that identity is presented, and if listeners can actually trust what they’re seeing.
As platforms continue to evolve their policies around AI-generated content and identity, artists who are honest, consistent, and intentional with their presence will be in a stronger position to build lasting trust with fans.
