Guess you can call this the first domino. Drake, aka the 6God has reached a resolution in his legal battle with iHeartMedia, not to be confused with the defamation lawsuit against UMG where they settled his dispute with the media giant related to the airplay of Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us.” This is seemingly about payola. Look it up if you’re unfamiliar.
ICYMI, the Gimme a Hug rapper previously accused iHeartMedia of accepting illicit payments aka payola, from Universal Music Group (UMG) to promote the diss track on the radio.
According to the Associated Press, both parties have come to an amicable agreement regarding the matter. We can’t verify this, but that often means one party wrote another party a check.
Here’s what Drake’s attorney said in the matter.
“We are pleased that the parties were able to reach a settlement satisfactory to both sides, and have no further comment on this matter.” Interesting but common result after a settlement.
What’s more, this legal issue, originally filed in November, follows a series of moves by Drake. Earlier this year, he also filed a defamation lawsuit against UMG, where the Toosie Slide emcee claimed the massive music company knowingly distributed “Not Like Us,” despite the false and defamatory claims it contained. We all know the part.
In his sprawling lawsuit, Drake alleged that UMG ignored the damaging accusations made in the song, fully aware it would generate significant financial success for the label. That part.
Looks like this settlement with iHeartMedia marks a significant step in the ongoing fight over the controversial diss track and shedding light into the behind-the-scenes dealings that may have influenced its overall promotion.
Interesting news if you ask us.
