Jermaine Dupri’s long-anticipated docuseries on Atlanta’s legendary strip club, Magic City, has found a home at STARZ. According to Deadline, the five-part series is set to premiere this summer, offering an in-depth look at the iconic club’s influence on hip-hop, culture, and entrepreneurship.
Produced by Dupri alongside Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment, the Charles Todd-directed project wrapped production in 2023 and features interviews with 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, Big Boi, and more. The series will explore Magic City’s impact beyond the entertainment world, delving into themes of hip-hop, crime, women’s sexuality, Black entrepreneurship, and socio-economic politics. It will also highlight the story of the club’s founder, Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney.
“Magic City: An American Fantasy is a riveting behind-the-curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at STARZ. “The docuseries’ unprecedented insider access and history unveiled from those who built its empire is a perfect complement to Starz’s slate of adult, culture-driving shows.”
Dupri has long been vocal about Magic City’s significance, describing it as more than just a club but a cultural institution where celebrities, hustlers, politicians, and locals converge. “Magic City is a second home for me,” he said when the docuseries was first announced. “It’s the one place where celebrities, hustlers, politicians, and Atlanta locals all come together. I’ve watched it evolve over the years from a local joint to an internationally recognized spot. It’s about time we tell this story the right way.”
Meanwhile, Jermaine Dupri has also been receiving well-deserved praise from industry peers. During a recent episode of Drink Champs, Nelly gave Dupri his flowers while reflecting on the long-awaited Verzuz battle between Dupri and Diddy that never happened.
“Him and Puff was going to do a Verzuz, and Puff was gon’ get murdered. Easy! Easy!” Nelly said. “Was not gonna be close. Puff is smart. He didn’t want no part. He knew that. Why you think he wanted to hold Verzuz in New York? JD could hold Verzuz anywhere. Puff only wanted to hold Verzuz in New York.”
He continued, “You do realize when you’re talking about JD, you’re talking about going all the way back to Kris Kross, Da Brat… You could lock JD in a room by himself, he will come out with the song. He can perform it, he can make the beat and he can write it. Smash.”
