So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 14th to Saturday 19th February 1994.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eleven new entrys, two re-entries, three climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Richard Marx – “Now And Forever”
The first single from Richard Marx‘s new album gets a fifth week on the UK top 40 but is down sixteen places.
39. Saint Etienne – “Pale Movie”
No such luck for Saint Etienne. Their second week sees their latest release down eleven places and out of the top thirty.
38. Marradonna – “Out Of My Head”
Our first new entry comes from producers Richie Malone and Scottie Rouse, who call themselves Marradonna and this is their first release.
37. NKOTB – “Dirty Dawg”
Once upon a time the boys of NKOTB would bag top ten hits and number ones galore. No so their comeback which is down ten places.
36. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Twist And Shout”
Chaka Demus and Pliers have been number one with their third single, which is down eleven places in its eleventh week.
35. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – “Can’t Wait To Be With You”
Former chart toppers DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince arrived on the scene with this tune last week but it’s down six places a week on.
34. Shara Nelson – “Uptight”
Going down sixteen places is the third solo single to come from former Massive Attack singer Shara Nelson.
33. The Cocteau Twins – “Blue Beard”
The Cocteau Twins are back in the top 40 for 1994 with the follow up to last year’s “Evangeline”, which comes from their latest album, “Four-Calendar Café”.
32. Sting – “Nothing ‘Bout Me”
Sting has been hanging about with his chums Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart for some time but he’s back on his own with this new entry.
31. Jam And Spoon – “Right In The Night”
German duo Jam And Spoon make their UK top 40 debut this week with two releases behind them, number three is the one that does it.
30. Sasha – “Higher Ground”
Sasha did that last week, but instead of finding higher ground in week two, they find lower ground eleven places down.
29. Haddaway – “I Miss You”
Haddaway leaves the top twenty this week, down twelve with this long-running and slow burning single from him.
28. Gabrielle – “Because Of You”
Gabrielle gets a new entry with the fourth single to come from her debut album, “Find My Way” and it gives her four top 40 chart positions out of four.
27. Atlantic Ocean – “Waterfall”
Atlantic Ocean fall five places in their second week on the chart. They are currently recording their first album due out later this year.
26. Deep Forest – “Sweet Lullaby”
Deep Forest go deeper down the UK top 40, this week a drop of eleven places for the debut single from Michel Sanchez and Eric Mouquet.
25. Urban Cookie Collective – “Sail Away”
While sailing away with their new entry of last week are the Urban Cookie Collective as it goes down seven places.
24. The Proclaimers – “Let’s Get Married”
Craig and Charlie of The Proclaimers returned to the chart last week after an absence of four years, but they too are on the way down, falling three places.
23. Crowded House – “Locked Out”
Another of last week’s new entry’s also going down is the one from Crowded House, as they exit the top twenty, down eleven.
22. Level 42 – “Forever Now”
Something new now and we welcome back Level 42 to the UK top 40 for the first time in three years as they precede the release of their upcoming tenth album.
21. Cypress Hill – “Insane In The Brain”
While Cypress Hill come back with a chart re-entry with a single that first came out last year but only made it as far as No.32 then.
20. Soundgarden – “Spoonman”
American band Soundgarden return to the UK top 40 but only for the second time with this new entry, which also becomes their highest yet.
19. SWV – “Anything”
One above them are the three ladies of SWV who get a new entry also in the top twenty with their first release since “Right Here”.
18. Aretha Franklin – “A Deeper Love”
Falling twelve is another American, Aretha Franklin, with her latest. The track comes from a new greatest hits album that’s out next month.
17. K7 – “Come Baby Come”
Three months later and K7 is still top twenty in the UK with his debut single. This week it’s down four places.
16. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Two Tribes”
Frankie Goes To Hollywood are back for a third time with a re-issue of their second number one hit from 1984.
15. The Cranberries – “Linger”
The Cranberries linger no more as their first UK chart hit slips just one place, three weeks after they arrived.
14. Wendy Moten – “Come In Out Of The Rain”
And it’s down three for Wendy Moten with her debut single, having left the top ten this time last week.
13. Elton John and RuPaul – “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”
Elton John is back and this time he’s brought with him American ‘model’ RuPaul for a ‘re-telling’ of his 1976 number one hit with Kiki Dee!
12. Reel 2 Real and The Mad Stuntman – “I Like To Move It”
Moving it down again this wee are Reel 2 Real and The Mad Stuntman as they leave the top ten, down two places.
11. Meat Loaf – “Rock’N’Roll Dreams Come Through”
Climbing five is the second single from Meat Loaf’s latest multi-Platinum album and it’s also this week’s highest mover!
10. Cappella – “Move On Baby”
Cappella scored their third top ten hit last week with this track, but a week later it’s down three places.
9. Celine Dion – “The Power Of Love”
Going down four is Celine Dion with her cover of the Jennifer Rush song from 1985 that topped the chart for five weeks.
8. 2 Unlimited – “Let The Beat Control Your Body”
Going up one place is the new entry from 2 Unlimited last week. This is the first new song from Ray and Anita following their “No Limits” album of last year.
7. Ace Of Base – “The Sign”
Ace Of Base return to the top ten this week with a big new entry, which is only their second here after “All That She Wants”.
6. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting – “All For Love”
Here comes Sting again with his pals Rod and Bryan and they are going back up the chart, two places higher than they dropped to this time last week!
5. Toni Braxton – “Breathe Again”
Going down two is Toni Braxton with her first UK top 40 hit. Her self-titled debut album charts here having been released last year.
4. Enigma – “Return To Innocence”
While Enigma are non-movers with their chart return to innocence. Once again the song features the vocals of his wife Sandra, herself a big recording artist in Europe.
3. Suede – “Stay Together”
This week’s highest new entry comes from Suede with their highest charting single yet and the first to come from their upcoming second studio album.
2. D:Ream – “Things Can Only Get Better”
Having been toppled last week, D:Ream hold on to the number two spot for a second week with their former number one.
1. Mariah Carey – “Without You”
Which means Mariah Carey stays top for a second week with her cover of Harry Nilsson‘s 70’s hit which is the third single to come from her album “Music Box”. Can she make it three in a row, or will Suede or someone one else stop her? There’s only one way to find out…
