UK Top 40 Singles Chart 26th February 1984 – Talk About Pop Music



So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, forty years ago, there were five new entrys, sixteen climbers and no non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Eurythmics – “Here Comes The Rain Again”
We start this week with the rain coming again possibly for the last time for the Eurythmics as they drop eleven places after seven weeks on.

39. Mel Brooks – “To Be Or Not To Be”
While our first new entry comes from American comedian Mel Brooks with the title song from a new movie that he also stars in!

38. Julia And Company – “Breakin’ Down”
Julia Nixon heads up Julia And Company and they are new to the UK chart and music with this new entry, which is their debut single.

37. The Fraggles – “Fraggle Rock Theme”
The latest creation from the same producers as The Muppets are The Fraggles and the title theme from their TV programme is the next new song.

36. The Manhattan Transfer – “Spice Of Life”
Still enjoying the spice of life are The Manhattan Transfer. But week seven finds them down six places.

35. Alexei Sayle – “Ullo John, Gotta New Motor?”
British comedian Alexei Sayle makes his UK chart debut this week with this catchy number, having released his first single back in 1981.

34. The Fiction Factory – “(Feels Like) Heaven”
For how much longer will it feel like heaven for The Fiction Factory as they go down eight places this week?

33. Ultravox – “One Small Day”
Also going down are Ultravox with their new single. After just four weeks on the chart they are down six places.

32. Juan Martin – “Love Theme From The Thorn Birds”
Both “Themes” from the TV series The Thorn Birds are still top 40. This one from Juan Martin falls eight places.

31. Marilyn – “Cry And Be Free”
The latest chart entry from Marilyn climbs eight places in its second week, hoping for a higher place this time next week.

30. Soft Cell – “Down In The Subway”
Also going up eight are Soft Cell with their chart return of 1984 which moves into the top thirty in its second week.

29. Thomas Dolby – “Hyperactive”
Losing much of his hyperactivness is Thomas Dolby. This week he’s down seven places with his biggest chart hit so far.

28. The Re-Flex – “The Politics Of Dancing”
It’s been a good week for dancing and for The Re-Flex as they go up six places and into the top thirty.

27. Swans Way – “Soul Train”
The soul train for Swans Way is heading home almost as soon as they arrived as they go down four places in week four.

26. Richard Hartley and the Michael Reed Orchestra – “Torvell And Dean” (EP)
Richard Hartley co-wrote The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but this time he’s about with some music from ice skaters Torvell And Dean and it’s also this week’s highest new entry!

25. Carmel – “More, More, More”
Carmel returned to the top 40 last week with this song and get a boost of ten more more more places a week later.

24. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright”
Lots of TV themes and songs about in the chart at the moment and this is the longest running of them all from Joe Fagin, who falls seven places.

23. Henry Mancini and his Orchestra – “Main Theme From The Thorn Birds”
And here’s another one and the other one from The Thorn Birds from Henry Mancini and his Orchestra, which climbs two this week.

22. Duran Duran – “New Moon On Monday”
Duran Duran depart the top twenty down just two places with their latest. Their album “Seven And The Ragged Tiger” is now Silver certified!

21. The Smiths – “What Difference Does It Make?”
For The Smiths it makes alot as they also leave the upper half of the chart and go down three places with their current release.

20. Van Halen – “Jump”
Having been last week’s highest new entry, Van Halen ‘jump’ eleven places into the top twenty this week, the highest climbers!

19. Hot Chocolate – “I Gave You My Heart”
Also jumping into the top twenty are Hot Chocolate as they go up nine places with their best seller for a year.

18. Madonna – “Holiday”
The American singer Madonna, meanwhile, falls five places with her first chart hit here. Her first album is simply called “Madonna”.

17. Matt Bianco – “Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed”
Matt Bianco make their top twenty debut this week with their debut single which climbs four places in week four.

16. Madness – “Michael Caine”
But Madness got stopped just outside the top ten and a week later they go down six. Their new album is called “Keep Moving” and it’s out now.

15. Shannon – “Let The Music Play”
And Shannon will find it madness that her first big hit here hasn’t gone any further as she drops down one place.

14. Howard Jones – “Hide And Seek”
Swapping places and going up one is Howard Jones with his latest, which was a former highest new entry three weeks ago.

13. Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
Cyndi Lauper is still having fun eight weeks on with her debut single, but she’s down five from the number eight position.

12. Matthew Wilder – “Break My Stride”
While Matthew Wilder breaks his stride and also drops out of the top ten, down six for him with his first UK top 40 hit.

11. Break Machine – “Street Dance”
The Break Machine street dance continues to move and move higher up the top 40. This week they are five places higher.

10. Slade – “Run Runaway”
This week, Slade return to the top ten after a two month absence with their latest offering, which goes up nine places.

9. The Style Council – “My Ever Changing Moods”
I wonder if The Style Council’s moods will change as their brand new single goes down four after just one week in the top five?

8. Billy Joel – “An Innocent Man”
Billy Joel was one of last week’s joint highest climbers and he too returns to the UK top ten for 1984 with a climb of four this week.

7. Queen – “Radio Ga Ga”
All we hear is radio ga ga and radio goo goo from Queen as their former number two hit drops three places.

6. Rockwell – “Somebody’s Watching Me”
Rockwell (and Michael Jackson) move up one this week. Real name Kennedy Gordy is the son of Motown producer Berry.

5. The Thompson Twins – “Doctor Doctor”
The Thompson Twins had been non-movers for the past two weeks but go down two places this week with their second top three hit.

4. Nik Kershaw – “Wouldn’t It Be Good?”
Going up five into the top five is the first chart hit for British singer and songwriter Nik Kershaw…now isn’t that good?(!)

3. Kool and The Gang – “Joanna”
Going up seven places are Kool and The Gang, which makes this their second UK top three hit so far. The first was “Get Down On It” in 1981.

2. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax”
But after five weeks on top, Frankie Goes To Hollywood surrender the number one spot for someone else as they go down one…

1. Nena – “99 Red Balloons”
…and that honour goes to German band Nena as they go up one to become this week’s new number one with their very first UK top 40 single! But can they make it a second, or will Kool and The Gang, Nik Kershaw or someone else take it from them? There’s only one way to find out…
