Unfiltered: Full Interview with Tinywiings
Laura Catana (LC):
âWeâre back with another episode of Unfiltered by Symphonic, the series where we sit down with real ones in the indie scene, and get into the music, the mindset, and the moments that shape them. Today, Iâm happy to welcome Tinywiings. Sheâs a Canadian rapper, songwriter, and poet from Calgary, Alberta.â
âTiny Wings brings fierce, fearless energy to everything she creates, blending hip hop, pop, and EDM with lyrics that celebrate female sexuality, independence, and radical self-confidence.â
âLetâs get into itâŚ. Whatâs been going on? Whatâs happening in the world of Tiny?â
Tinywiings (T):
âIâve just been writing! I just got back to Canada recently. I was in Philadelphia for a while, collaborating and visiting people. Then I came back to Calgary, went to Vancouver, and now Iâm back in Calgary. So Iâve been all over, but mostly working on writing right now, getting ideas. I havenât been in the studio much, just working on some new, exciting things.â
LC:
âYouâve been making music for a while⌠Did I also read you used to be a paramedic?â
T:
âYeah, I did! It feels like a whole lifetime ago. I did it for quite a while. That was my childhood dream job. It was intense.â
LC:
âThatâs quite a career change!â
T:
âYeah, going from one world to another.â
LC:
âIs that still something you bring with you, that energy? Or is it a different part of your life?â
T:
âDefinitely a different part of my life. It was a whole other chapter. I was a different person then. It was good for my character development. It gave me a lot of life experience. I learned a lot about myself. I do bring it with me as an artist, facing fears, adrenaline stuff.â
LC:
âWhen people hear Tinywiings, what do you want them to associate it with?â
T:
âJust feeling good. Authenticity. I have a variety of music, but most know my clubby bangers, the bad bitch music. Thatâs what people associate with my music⌠But if you dig deeper into the lyrics, there are more layers than just club stuff.â
LC:
âNice. How long have you been making music as Tinywiings?â
T:
âI released my first song at the end of 2019, so I usually say 2020.â
LC:
âTime flies⌠Itâs 2025 now⌠What terrified you early in your career that now feels second nature?â
T:
âPerforming sober. I got sober two and a half years ago. Before, I always wrote, performed, and drank. I didnât know if I could do it sober. Now, itâs so much betterâless stress. Iâve conquered that fear.â
LC:
âWe all curate what people see online, including me. Is there a part of your life or personality your fans rarely see?â
T:
âMy family life⌠I donât have kids, but lots of nieces and nephews. Iâm a proud auntie and love hanging out with them. I donât think fans know much about that side of me.â
LC:
âAny advice, music or life advice, you come back to when things get tough?â
T:
âI tell myself, âI didnât come this far just to come this far. â Any artist knows itâs up and down and frustrating. You have to keep goingâŚâ
âSometimes I listen to my own music and think, I canât quit nowâI love this.â
LC:
âWas there one big risk you took that felt scary but paid off?â
T:
âBeing honest about my struggles with addiction. Telling fans I was going to rehab. Switching gears to more real music, not just partying songs. I was nervous, but it resonated with people. My fans relate more, and I feel closer to them.â
LC:
âWhatâs the biggest change youâve seen in yourself as you evolved?â
T:
âIâm more introverted than people think, especially now that Iâm sober. Drinking was social for me. Now I love writing at home with my cat. My social battery runs out quicker. I still love performing and being with people, but getting there is different. Iâm navigating this new part of myself.â
LC:
âOnce youâre out on stage, do you love it?â
T:
âYeah, itâs probably my favorite.â
LC:
âWeâve come far talking about mental health, but thereâs more to do. Any advice you want to share?â
T:
âYouâre not alone. Everyone struggles. There are people and resources out there. Just hold on. The world is wild, but youâre not alone.â
LC:
âWhat can fans expect from you this summer? Any new projects?â
T:
âLots of new music coming. More content tooâIâve been slacking on videos, but Iâm on it. Exciting summer bops and an EP later this year. All the writing will come to life soonâŚâ
LC:
âTell us about a recent moment that reminded you why you make musicâŚâ
T:
âIn Philadelphia, I went to an open house for Pace Creators, a one-stop shop for artists. We had a âPass the Auxâ session, where everyone shared music. Seeing peopleâs reactions to my music, and mine to theirsâthatâs my favorite part. Meeting people and finding my crowd.â
LC:
âWhat music are you listening to now? Put us on someone new.â
T:
âMy friend 86LOVE from Calgary. His song âNiceâ is my favorite right now. He has a unique style, kind of his own lane. Youâll know when you hear it. We have a song coming out together, too.â
LC:
âAlright, folks, thanks for kicking it with us today. This is Unfiltered with Symphonic. Much love to Tiny Wings for sharing her story, energy, and gems.â
âCatch you next time!â
T:
âThis has been Tinywiings! Youâre listening to Unfiltered with Symphonic.â
